GENERAL INFORMATION

PLANT TREES AND LEARN SPANISH

The School is called “Flor del Maíz” because this is the Spanish translation of the word Tzutujil, which is the name of the Mayan people of San Pedro, and also the name of their language.

Flor del Maíz is a profitable organisation that uses the income of its students to help the community. The school thus combines a mixture of Spanish classes with volunteer work in order to improve the local environment and aid in various areas of education. Flor del Maiz supports two small projects in particular :a project which helps the poorest children in the community by giving them the opportunity to attend school, and another which helps to plant more trees to keep the forests alive.

OUR PHILOSOPHY:
Flor del Maíz is an organisation that works to protect the values which we feel are currently being lost from the community in San Pedro. The aim of the school is to teach people how to contribute to the improvement of environmental problems, and how to work for the community. We teach them about economic development and the values of life.

OUR VISION:
To express the important viewpoints of or culture. In this way we hope to rescue the values that we feel we are losing in our society.

OUR MISSION:
To unite our traditional culture with modern culture in a positive way.

We hope to restore confidence in our own culture, reinforce human values and to be open to other ideas.

OUR GOAL:
To rescue our culture through the participation of people who believe in and have confidence in our work, to create a large team to improve the environment, and be able to give something back to mother nature.
To create an agreeable atmosphere for our students so that they can have the opportunity and confidence to express their feelings and share their life experiences with the employees at the school as well as with their host families.

To plant more trees and to find more children to support who do not have the opportunity to receive a good education.
